Hi,
I would install on my 2008 scott scale new drive with xtr trail crank 38-26T but to do this I need proper front derailleur, scott is designed to e-type front derailleur.
XTR have 2 types of Etyp derailleur:
FD-M985-E (this is model for my scott but work with only 40-44T top gear teth)
FD-M985-E2 (e-type without BB plate, but scott scale have only one bottom bracket mount in seat tube, this derailleur needs two mounts)
Clamp based derailleurs are: 28.6, 31.8, 34.8mm and my seattube is over 38mm.
This is very strange for me that this crank can't be used on scott scale.

It may be possible by using a road front derailleur in combination with a braze on clamp in the right size.
http://www.smud-carbon.eu makes them in every size you need.

You can use the Sram XX 38.2mm high mount top pull on your frame :-)

Otherwise - I tried with an e type xt front derailleur and even thought the cage was sitting a bit high it worked fine. The sram xx is 118,5 grams so much lighter.

new XTR Dyna-SYs is only compatible with components in the Dyna-Sys lineup so any other derailleur like Sram or Road 7900 will not work.

No physical reason it won't work, Shimano want you to only buy Shimano kit after all!

are you sure you succesfully used FD-M985-E derailleur with FC-M980 38-26T crank and this worked?

Nope - but I have used an old FD-M760-E with Sram XX 39-26T crank q156mm and it worked fine.

so I think I will go with Sram XX high clamp top pull 38.2 with my new XTR dynasys drive - but I have to be 100% sure so does different chain line between xtr (46.8mm) and sram (49.5mm) will not cause any issues?

If you current have an e-type front derailleur on your bike - how about getting the XTR rear derailleur, cassette and triggers and try it with your old front derailleur. I think this would be the best option for you.

I don't think the difference in the chainline between XTR and XX would be any problem - this can be adjusted with the limited screws. What could be a problem is how much pull the xtr trigger on the front. I had problems when I changed from the x.0 gripshift to the XX triggers. Then I couldn't use my road front derailleur.

The chainline should not be an issue. Almost any FD should be able to accommodate that much difference.

I use an XTR E Type on my Scott Scale running 28-40. Works fine.

yes, because e-type is designed to work with all big chainrings between 40-44T so no problem here

Having the same problem here,
i have a M980 crankset (38-26T) on my Spark 900 2013. And i am looking for a Xtr Front Der. that is compatible with the Spark frame and with the 38T ring.
It doesnt exist.
The M985-E is compatible with Spark , but it is designed to work with 40-44T only.
And the M985-E2 is compatible with 38T . But it is not compatible with Spark mount.

Dont know what to do.
