I build 26" bike for XC with 2x10 drive . Gonna use it mostly on flat terrain (road/mud - forest trails) and some trips to the mountians on steeper trails) . I have already purchased 11-36T cassette for rear and now I wonder which chainrings setup choose for front crankset . I have two options (XTR group) 42/30 or 40/28 . No idea which will suit me best, have no comparison with current 29" cross. Which setup is the most popular for 26" with 2x10 ?? Know that it is very subjective but need an advice for more 'universal' setup .
Regards.

The 30/42 is better for what you normally ride, ie flat XC... the 28/40 is better for when you venture off into the mountains.... overall the 28/40 would be the "all rounder" option, climbing will be less work and you'll still get a good turn of speed on the flat stuff... but.... I suggest you gear the bike for the riding you primarily do, so the 30/42 option, and just suck up the extra bit of work you are going to have to put in when you venture up steeper stuff.
Or... have both sets of chainrings and just switch across to the 28/40 rings when you go into the mountains.
