I for one would not want the port- Too much chance that it dies mid-ride with a 100 hour battery.

Do you do a lot of 100 hour rides!?

No, but do you believe something like this would have the accuracy to be able to run it to near empty and then recharge?
When the powercontrols had to go on a charger they would doe partway through rides all the time.
Thing shows it has battery life and then takes a dump on you.
I would rather have a new 1000 hour factory battery.

Anybody know why Stages can't use carbon cranks for measuring power? Does it have to do with carbon flexing inconsistently? If they could do carbon I think that would be the best option.

better option if you don't want to spend upwards of 2k. I don't see any disadvantages the stages has over the SRM. It just doesn't make sense to pay double for something that does the same thing.

it is not doing the same thing. It does not use the same technologies, so it's not the same.
I am not saying stage is bad. SRM is not cheap, but has the knowledge, reputation and history to back their products.

I'm thinking of doing an XTR crank, Wolftooth ring, Stages PM & everything else XX1. Other than this not being an SRM (not in the budget) any reason this wont work?

I am using a XTR with Stages and Wolftooth, this was one of the only options in 180mm arms.
I have a bunch of SRM's in road and science but nothing with the correct BCD.

There are new 1x SRM units (shimano, sram and cannondale?) that are out and I was told they would be upgradeable to the user changeable battery once it is osrted, pretty nice.

Please, please don't compare Stages to SRM. One is one-leg, the other is two legs, and that makes an enormous difference in accuracy.
I'm not saying Stages is bad. It's just not nearly as good @ total power.

I have to admit that the Stages PM on Hollowgrams is extremely tempting yet still expensive. I can understand the single leg limitations but as a training tool it doesn't seem any worse than anything else, especially considering how variable MTB efforts seem to be. The sampling frequency and head unit sampling frequency seem to be the main issue to getting decent data though. Stages on Hollowgram arms is practically very nice too due to the range of spindle and spider options so it is a PM for life on any bike (MTB, CX/ Road), with any wheels (Shimano, XX1 driver) and any drivetrain (single, double or triple). Practilities-wise it seems very nice although I'd like to see more comparisons of data and some more in depth stuff about single vs double leg assumptions...
Would those using Power Meters for MTB be able to give their thoughts on the various practicalities of training by Power for MTB in the thread here:

it is a PM for life, if it lasts....
True
But the point of adaptability stands. Accuracy and usefulness on the other hand... seems that a lot of people here on WW, especially on the road side of things remain unconvinced by Stages.
