I find the gaps in the 10 speed xtr cassette too wide so can I use a road cassette?

I always did this with my 9 speed stuff but i know the pull ratios changed for 10 speed.

id ideally like a XO rear mech with Xo grip shift and dura ace cassette or similar Red Cassette.
i have XTR 9 speed mech shifters / XO 9 speed mech and shifters and XTR 10 speed mech and shifters.
out of this lot can i get a system that would work ?

Pull ratios have nothing to do with road vs MTB cassettes. It has to do with road vs. MTB shifters/derailleurs.

If the spacing is the same, you should be able to use a Dura Ace cassette. I think it's the same, but I'm not 100% sure, never tried it myself.

I used an 10speed DA cassette with SRAM X0 grip shits no problem at all

Is that the 10 speed XO grip not a converted 9 speed?

what rear mech do you use? what size cage ?

All 10 speed Shimano/SRAM cassettes have the same spacing so the only compatibility issues are generally people trying to run too large a cassette with a road RD (no clearance for the large cogs). You shouldn't have any issues the other way around and many DH race bikes actually run road cassettes. They have no need for climbing gears and the smaller spread lets then run a shorter chain/RD which helps with chain retention and to stop bashing the RD.

A road cassette will shift like crap when using a 10sp mtb rear derailleur. The top pulley wheel sits way too far from the gear cluster. You'll have to rig something up custom if you want to use a 10sp road cassette on a mtb and have it shift well.

Not exactly true Benno... You need to unthread your b tension screw to bring the derailleur pulleys closer to the cassette.

Shimano do an MTB rear mech for 10 speed shifter designed to work with road cassettes like with a 28T big sprocket. I think its called the T-780. I maybe wrong with the model number but it exists it says so in the Shimano bible.
